Indonesian Experts Convene to Discuss AI Ethics and Law Ahead of 2024 Elections

A consortium of Indonesian legal and technology organizations hosted an online discussion titled "Law and Ethics of AI Use in the 2024 Elections." The event brought together experts and the public to examine artificial intelligence's implications for the electoral process and broader society.

• Neles Tebay (Moderator) emphasized that adaptation to AI is inevitable, highlighting practical concerns such as "the ease of creating convincing deepfakes, voice cloning, and the complexities of copyright in an AI-driven content landscape."
• Dr. J. Widiantoro (IKAHUM Atma Jogja Chairman) stressed multi-stakeholder collaboration and noted that "AI has already been felt in various forms, whether in applications, starting from chatbots, virtual assistants, facial recognition."
• Dr. Y. Sari Murti Widiyastuti articulated challenges in regulating technology that evolves faster than legislative processes.
• Almer Akbar (DF Labs) distinguished between generative AI and conventional AI, emphasizing that "AI is an interdisciplinary challenge requiring perspectives from technology, law, psychology, and sociology."
• Sabrang Mowo Damar Panuluh noted that "AI cannot be viewed as good or bad first. AI is a tool. What makes it good or bad is how we utilize it."

The forum highlighted threats to electoral integrity, including AI-generated misinformation, the need for algorithmic transparency, and individual privacy protection against manipulation.
