DF Labs & Kitiran Foundation Equips Indonesian Participants with Practical Skills for the Generative AI Era
19 March, 2024 – DF Labs, an Applied AI R&D collective, in collaboration with Kitiran Foundation, successfully hosted an engaging online workshop titled “AI Talk: Mastering ChatGPT Together” on Sunday, March 17, 2024. The event, conducted via Zoom, drew a diverse audience of students, professionals, and AI enthusiasts from across Indonesia, eager to deepen their understanding and practical application of OpenAI’s ChatGPT.
The intimate workshop aimed to demystify the process of interacting with large language models (LLMs) like ChatGPT, emphasizing that effective prompting is key to unlocking their full potential. Facilitators guided attendees through the nuances of crafting clear, contextual, and creative prompts to achieve desired outcomes, moving beyond basic queries to more sophisticated applications.
The session was kicked off by Bayu Arga Damar, who served as the Master of Ceremonies. He set a welcoming and collaborative tone, outlining the day’s agenda which included a foundational refresher, interactive breakout coaching sessions, and an open Q&A.
Almer Akbar, Co-founder of DF Labs, led the main refresher session. He recapped fundamental concepts about ChatGPT, including its Transformer architecture and its ability to understand and generate human-like text. Akbar stressed the importance of developing the right mindset for prompting, highlighting techniques such as being specific, providing ample context, experimenting with different approaches, and learning iteratively from the AI’s responses. He also shared practical “magic words” and frameworks like “Let’s think step-by-step,” “ELI5” (Explain Like I’m 5), and “TL;DR” (Too Long; Didn’t Read) to enhance prompt effectiveness.
A significant portion of the workshop was dedicated to hands-on learning in breakout rooms, each facilitated by an experienced mentor from the DF Labs team: Almer Akbar, Raihan Ahimsa, Nuel Cahyanto, and Risang Panggalih. In these smaller groups, participants engaged directly with mentors, discussing specific use-cases such as summarizing YouTube content and academic papers, drafting proposals, and even exploring creative writing. The breakout sessions fostered a dynamic environment for personalized guidance and peer-to-peer learning.
The facilitators also addressed the capabilities and limitations of current AI models, including a discussion on the reliability of GPT detectors, particularly their tendency for false positives with non-native English text or highly structured writing. The overarching message was one of empowerment: while AI tools are powerful, human critical thinking and skillful interaction remain paramount.
The event concluded with an open “ngobrol bebas” (casual chat) session, allowing for further informal discussion and networking among participants and facilitators. Both DF Labs and Kitiran Foundation reiterated their commitment to fostering AI literacy and a vibrant AI community in Indonesia, encouraging attendees to continue exploring and experimenting with AI tools responsibly.
